Welcome to Carraignamuc Cottage.
The cottage on the rock of the pigs.
100 or so years ago the population here in our townsland was 10 times what it is now. You could probably say the same about most townlands in Ireland. The populations emigrated to the cities in search of work and a new life brought on by the industrial revolution. And as the people left the countryside and the elders passed on so did their skills and knowledge.
Knowledge of how to grow herbs and veg, of traditional Irish crafts, stonemasonery, thatching, butter and cheese making, country wine making etc, etc, things that have all disappeared rapidly over the years to be replaced with manufactured rubbish. Even the food we are encouraged to put in our mouths is rarely what we would like to think it is.
Our plan is to be as self suffient as possible, and we're getting there bit by bit, its an interesting learning curve. Many trials and a few errors but thats how you learn, its a very satisfying process.
We concentrate mostly on our polytunnels and veg with a few birds thrown in for good measure and their lovely eggs. Last year we grew grapes (the wine was amazing!), fresh sweetcorn, our annual crop of strawberrys and potatoes in the tunnel that harvest well before anyone else giving time and space to refill the beds with something else for a second harvest. Our orchard, only planted 4 years ago, gave us enough apples for 50 litres of cider. Result!
We're here to help you help yourself!
